Letter card from Niels Bohr to Harald Bohr

A Copenhagen, Niels Bohr Archive, Harald Bohr Correspondence, HBC-BOHR-090317t. Letter card, handwritten by Niels Bohr. On the reverse side: Hr stud mag H Bohr, Bredgade 62, Kjøbenhavn

Dear Harald!

A thousand thanks for your letter; I am also looking forward enormously to having much to do with each other someday and I hope that it will bring both of us much joy. You have no idea how much I have learned from you especially your going through of Jordan taught me in what seemed for me to be the most astounding manner that it is an all too cumbersome and rather unnecessary procedure (for everyone and particularly for the great mathematician [drawing of a stick man] ) to treat all problems as if they were a deep fog, which can be treated with greater or lesser “tact” (popularly known as irrefutable logic); rather that there is, at least in the case of mathematics, a solid foundation on which one, “perhaps”? partly through one’s own exertions and partly with much appreciated help from the aforementioned [stickman], can build.

Best regards to the whole family from
your brother N who is looking forward to seeing you again soon. |
